2009 Clues

The real clues for the 2009 lineup.

CLUE #1
Peter Pan had a good roast before he was beat to a pulp, and the ocean spray from a westward bay invites you to take a big gulp.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "TISKNOTTOOBANZ" ('tis not too bands)
DJJDfarmhound: "icicwonandthree" (we got it right!)
DJJDfarmhound: "I'll offer this: SPACE/VERMIN/PETER -- can be left alone now. As for the rest, circles abound, but no di. hits"

Links: Clue thread is here.

Answer: Snoop Dogg (the first half of the clue points to Peanuts and therefore Snoopy, the second half refers to the song "Gin and Juice" and to Snoop being from the west coast)

CLUE #2
Sun Ra said space is the place. Subtract Mr. Ra, the Arkestra too, add George Bailey and just a fraction of the universe of which a euro pop tart did zing.

Info: First heard at 1:11 PM on Monday, January 19th.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "CLUE 2 launched-- I think Zimmy wants to help later on this one. It will run again, too- on radio roo. LUNCHTIME!"
DJJDfarmhound: "ahh- somebody taped it. Smart~~ only two words wrong. Ochestra is wrong, but close. Same with the other mistake." (clarifying some mistakes in our original transcription)
DJJDfarmhound: "'zing' is criticial to solving the clue, at least I zink so"
DJJDfarmhound: "Just one band, but sometimes a band name has two parts: E.G. Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Tommy and the Folding Chairs, Etc." (Note that that tweet has a mistake which was then corrected, so it was definitely for this clue.)
DJJDfarmhound: "zing is not eng" ("zing" is Dutch for "sing")
djjd: "Nice list of Dutch musicians. Too bad it's so dang long, because exactly what you need is in there." (in reference to the Wikipedia list of Dutch musicians...just a joke as there was a band called "Mai Tai" on there)
Mr. Zimmy: "GEORGE = JIMMY, right?  Follow in that direction."
DJJDfarmhound: "more help on 2: george>jimmy> ? Don't give up. Maybe come back to it after a while. It's a twisted/non-straight path to the answer."
DJJDfarmhound: "This group led by somebody who's been around for a good while. Not on list of Dutch Performers- but one of those holds clue relief."
Mr. Zimmy: "'only farmhound will get you to the bottom of this' - Sir Coltrane Dreaming"
Mr. Zimmy: "this is a tough nut to crack....leads to artist with staying power, but somewhat under the o'riley" ("under the o'riley" translates to "under the radar" because of "Radar" O'Reilly on M*A*S*H)
DJJDfarmhound: "I'll offer this: SPACE/VERMIN/PETER -- can be left alone now. As for the rest, circles abound, but no di. hits"

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio of the clue is here (thanks to Northbound Headlight for the audio!)

Answer: Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3

CLUE #3
Vermin at the hill's brow are better than in the house.

Info: First heard at 6:04 PM on Monday, January 19th.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "icicwonandthree"
DJJDfarmhound: "I'll offer this: SPACE/VERMIN/PETER -- can be left alone now. As for the rest, circles abound, but no di. hits"
djjd: "Oh really?" (in response to katerade saying Deadmau5 was confirmed correct)
djjd: "Check your number 3- looks a bit off." (said to floyd831 who had Deadmau5 listed as their answer)
DJJDfarmhound: "Stay tuned for help with 3. That target was hit but apparently it didn't resonate when the arrow stuck the bull's eye."
DJJDfarmhound: "3 isn't MM- check out gear knickers of the south"
DJJDfarmhound: "#3 oliver nelson song BLANK moments- that's the knick!" (the song is "Stolen Moments")
DJJDfarmhound: "3: jimmy stewart movie with directions in title. reverse those directions in southern way. that's where the criminal incident wuz" (even though it's not actually a Jimmy Stewart movie, the movie in question was North by Northwest, reversing that brings us to SXSW where Bon Iver had gear stolen)

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio is here.

Answer: Bon Iver (his real name is Justin Vernon, Vernon sounds like vermin...beyond that I have no clue what the logic was)

CLUE #4
Not rockville bound, but near there, where it rocks and rolls.

Info: First heard at 11:46 AM on Wednesday, January 21st.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "it's not REM, btw"
DJJDfarmhound: "It's not Rockville Doctor, I will tell you that much" which translates to not Rockville, MD. DJ JD also confirmed that this is right.
Mr. Zimmy also mentioned Lithuanian basketball and Jane Fonda again, but DJ JD said those were both red herrings.
DJJDfarmhound: "#4 near rockville. not near in geography."
DJJDfarmhound: "near in sound, but not by using rhyme"
DJJDfarmhound: "Clue #4 is Hand's clue writing nadir, imho."

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio is here.

Answer: Lucinda Williams (no idea about the logic)

CLUE #5
When on stage, one star is missing.

Info: First heard at 5:56 PM on Wednesday, January 21st.

From DJ JD:
Operator 5011: "some seem near but so far, much like many a star." (seems to be a comment on our guesses)
Operator 5011: "One star is missing but nothing is missing. Everything that was once there, is. invisibility= great party trick twinkle twinkle wink"
DJJDfarmhound: "number cinco -- buena suerte" (good luck in Spanish)
Operator 5011: "cinco: tienes que cazar por ello.....no pescar por ello. es posible.." (in Spanish, this means that you have to hunt for it, not fish for it...could be telling us Phish isn't the answer, or could be referring to a band with an animal name)
Operator 5011: "last palabra on cinco before the news clues.....can a star buckle? twink about it, riddle hunters." (reference to Orion's belt?)
DJJDfarmhound: "cinco not five, dificil not easy" (dificil is Spanish for difficult)
DJJDfarmhound: "#5 - the one whose name is not salt got has come the closet to this, if that's any constellation."
djjd: "buena suerte amgios, creo en espanol"
djjd: "si- tienes razon, espanol is the key, Not JBL or Bose, but def. native speakers"

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio is here.

Answer: Rodrigo y Gabriela (they cover Metallica's "Orion")

CLUE #6
You will actually find this clue in the analog world, not the digital one ...in one of two Gene's pockets where ladies venture not.
Second part:
Mac users rejoice! Let me take you down to funky town with Strongbad help.

Info: Long story short, there was a sign on the wall in a mens' room at a bar called Gene's in Morgantown, WV that Chandler went to find for us. The sign gave us the second part of the clue.
First heard on Wednesday, January 21st around 7:30 PM.

From DJ JD:
DJ JD made a LOT of references to this clue, and he gave us a lot of help deciphering the first part. I'm not listing that here because it's not really relevant anymore and it took up a lot of room. All I'm listing is the help that came after the sign was found.
DJJDfarmhound: "There are many funky towns- many with big stars."
DJJDfarmhound: "And nice work C- hope you enjoyed your venture into G's."
Mr. Zimmy: "half of 'strongbed' is head rearing" (head rearing = red herring)
Mr. Zimmy: "well-- tech******* **** **** ****"
DJJDfarmhound: "(CONT) nically more than half" (combined with Zimmy's help, this gets us to technically more than half of "strongbad" is a red herring)
DJJDfarmhound: "see the hibbing dude to complete fragments"
DJJDfarmhound: "even though the hound loves his mac, chasing jobs product is the wrong attack"
DJJDfarmhound: "macisabrvtn"
DJJDfarmhound: "Regarding Funky Town, ignore the song by that name, or you will be let down. Find the funk, you will wear the crown."
Mr. Zimmy: "mac not eekwal the computer, funky town not eekwal the worn out pop song, that's it for this clue- rest is up 2u"
Mr. Zimmy: "MAC in 6: MAC is in funky town, that's where MAC is."
Mr. Zimmy: "funk as several homes in the usa, but this southern city has turned out the best that I know of."
Mr. Zimmy: "One of the frustrating things is that when somebody nails it- and solves it exactly by figuring out the clue in the way it was intended- we can't say: DING DING DING. So and so is the winner. I do high five people in the office, though- and say 'wow' that was quick! In some cases- the correct answer has garnered little or no traction/response. When the lineup is announced you will know, though, who got it and when- so that's kind of fun-to-come. But yes, it's a bit frustrating and maddening at the moment. For us, also. I had dreams about clues last night. Anyhoo- some of the 'bigger' clues are yet to come. Next week we really get into it."
djjd: "strongbad strongbed stongbid ALL OK-- good eye!"
djjd: "there is more than one way to chop up a word-"
djjd: "strongbad, chop it up, see pervious permutations, chop them up, less than half of one chopped up is what ye seek, it will jump out at ye, if you are still lost, ask HOUND FOR HELP ON SAT, HES ALREADY READING HIS SLEEP BOOK."
djjd: "leave out help, if it works for strongbad chop, it will work for the other two words as well. The answer is the same, and it's in all three. That's still a lotto cypherin' but the answer is there"
DJJDfarmhound: "best not to take clue help *too* literally- cept this one: mac is in funky town. Example: 'suits you' not like kind warn by Wayne Newton."
djjd: "You will see soon if it's either of those or something else somebody guessed that's not those two. to fact check your answer, you could figure out the funky town bit. That one has practically been handed on a platter. (Though there are so many tweets, maybe made it harder in the long run.) And to be sure- it's really hard to solve because of the way this particular group is tweaked right now."
djjd: "because this particular ensemble (in it's unique form) is sorta difficult to explain with clues- you'll see. Plus, it's one of the things I'm excited about. Then again, I'm excited about the overall lineup this year in a big way. I've been to all b'roos except the first one. This one, to my tastes, rivals the Neil Young or Radiohead b'roos."
DJJDfarmhound: "more on six- certainly not a big money band. Not Eddie Money either. Closer to Ally McBeal if anything."
djjd: "you are going down the wrong street w/ mcBEAL" (Beale Street got us to Booker T)
DJJDfarmhound: "SIX- you don't need anymore help on this one- putting a check by SOLVED. Could bet tweaked, I guess, but I am counting it done."
DJJDfarmhound: "And for the record- funky town is one of the few true homes of funk music in the US of A. Review twits to see which one. Rrarng axel."
DJJDfarmhound: "as for the top pix on six, i say 'nothing left to see here folks, move on, your work is done...'"

Links: Clue thread is here. Chandler posted a photo of the sign here.

Answer: Booker T and the DBTs (the letters for BT and DBT can be found in "Strongbad," plus other connections and hints)

CLUE #7
Take me back, take me way way back, before Hyndford Street, before the way it was, where it all began. Definitely, arguably, evolutionary...I bet Desmond will dig that one.

Info: First heard on Friday, January 23rd, around 11:40 AM.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "help from a tweet- check your spailing on the name of the street!" (we originally thought it was Hindforth street)
DJJDfarmhound: "the guy on the raccoon tour has good clue insights" (referring to rooconteur, who had mentioned Kerouac, Bob Dylan, and the fact that another tweet was likely just a joke)
DJJDfarmhound: "that tweet was written before the latest dead guess" (rooconteur had also mentioned the Dead, but the tweet about him wasn't referring to to that guess)
djjd: "Yes. Od uoy inthkhattcipsawdumanr?" (translation: "Yes. Do you think that pic was random?" in response to someone pointing out the picture on the audio)
Mr. Zimmy: "waaaaay back y'all"
Mr. Zimmy: "Do you think Desmond checks out the sounds that far north?"
DJJDfarmhound: "definitely, arguably, evolutionary * * * * * * *?" (the ******* could be "biology")
DJJDfarmhound: "desmond not lost desmond, but an even more noble one"
Mr. Zimmy: "you will stay lost if you focus on D from L. Seek ye a more noble D, who is often seen in a cape." (assumed to mean Desmond Tutu, who hails from Cape Town)
DJJDfarmhound: "number 7- in the right region now, but admittedly big region. Chill til monday when the campaign catch phrase from Edwards will take effect."
djjd: "You have good taste in music." (after k2boarder36 guessed Tinariwen)
DJJDfarmhound: "7- your search has taken you to africa- this is very good. So far the guesses are missing their mark- or at least mark 7. def. arg evo"
DJJDfarmhound: "7: def arg evo boiled down to de ar ev"
DJJDfarmhound: "7: follow the devolution of those three words and the answer will POP out at you."
DJJDfarmhound: "or DEA?"
DJJDfarmhound: "7- definitely in africa- second ref (one with DEA) definitely in USA- both have the sounds of the motherland"

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio is here.

Answer: King Sunny Adé (African connection plus "definitely arguably evolutionary" leads to the letters DAE or Adé)

CLUE #8
If you gave up on them, it's time to reboot them. Grooves as sweet as a lost Fig Newton.

Info: Description on the audio says "not coacho ocho, just ocho. I think you'll nail this one, I really really do. I am curious how long it will take. Starting my timer now."
The picture on the audio is of Curious George.
First heard on Friday, January 23rd, around 5:45 PM.

From DJ JD:
Mr. Zimmy: "JD, you and garage band loops." (referring to the music in the background of the clue)
DJJDfarmhound: "OCHO: no fruit in band title - these fine young cannibals have been around for a while. Music is par for the course."
Mr. Zimmy: "FIG NEWTON: drop the fruit if that suits you- and also don't focus on 'reboot' so much" (we don't need to focus on "fig" or "reboot")
DJJDfarmhound: "more help on newton coming next week in FARMHOUNDS HELP FOR THE CLUE SEEKEISTS"
djjd: "or FILL IN THE BLANK: _ _ _ _ _ pLAYS ZAppA" (just a joke about the easiest possible clue, but the fact that the 'p's are all lowercase could be significant)
DJJDfarmhound: "cannibals- not literal (musical?)"
djjd: "hmmm--- kinda in the right direction." (in response to a post about grooves being related to records/DJs and cannibals being related to sampling or to jam bands)

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio is here.

Answer: Beastie Boys (they sample other music, they were sued by James Newton for sampling, and they used to be called the Young Aborigines, Curious George could be a "Brass Monkey" reference)

CLUE #9
When it travels, it waves au revoir. If it's espoir, it guards us.

Info: Description on the audio says "the watusi, the twist (JOKE ONLY) And no, Yoko isn't playing Bonnaroo." ("the watusi, the twist" is from the Beatles' "Revolution 9" which the audio title also references, so as the description says, just a joke)
"Au revoir" means goodbye in French, "espoir" means "of hope."
First heard on Friday, January 23rd, at 6:52 PM.

Links: Clue thread is here. Audio is here.

Answer: Crystal Castles (no idea about the logic)

CLUE #10
Sencha left the ark, life's gritty, then good.

Info: Sencha is a type of Japanese tea.
First heard on Monday, January 26th, at 2:50 PM.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "fire up your zen, here comes number 10. Well, sometime." (zen might have been an early reference to the Japanese tea)
DJJDfarmhound: "10- off to a VERY good start."
DJJDfarmhound: "forgive me for sloppy tweets, not enough Japanese tea lately"
DJJDfarmhound: "RE: 10 (well, some folks are off to a good start, some heading in wrong direction...)"
DJJDfarmhound: "#10- lots of impressive displays of musical knowledge/ music history. make sure the words you think ye heard *are* those words." (this was when we had "Since you" instead of "sencha")
DJJDfarmhound: ""Since you left the ark, life's gritty, and good." One word too many *and* ....are u sure?"
DJJDfarmhound: "'since you' is actually one word, and that one word is not part of words like 'since' or 'you' (an earlier tweet points the way)"
DJJDfarmhound: "Sencha asked."
djjd: "I can- Caroline is often slang for Carolina, north or south. Like Grits, kind of a bias in the clue." (this was in a different clue thread, but the reference to grits implies that the logic for the Al Green guess was correct)

Links: Clue thread is here.

Answer: Al Green (he's from Arkansas, sencha is green tea, there was a famous incident where his girlfriend threw hot grits in his face)

CLUE #11
Magnet draw day from dark, don't feed the horse with a lark, neutral cars stay in the park.

Info: First heard on Tuesday, January 27th, around 12:00 PM.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "RE: 11 How is 11 different from the other clues?"
DJJDfarmhound: "11- is only clue on a choose day, and I have been reticent to give help. That's no lark."
DJJDfarmhound: ""Just know who the real doppelganger is. That's all I'm going to say about that." Farmhound Gump"
DJJDfarmhound: "The definition of 'lark' holds the key, Jimmy."
djjd: "I think we are suffering from clue fatigue, including hound/hand. Let's take a break. Everybody go hug a friend and look at the sky. I give us all a break until tomorrow after noon. And though this is more like that compassionate hound- I will say the Jimmy ain't Stewart, but a combo of Mr. Buttons (old school) and Jimmy who rescued aquariums." (Red Buttons + Jimmy Herring = red herring)
djjd: "It was time for one- plus y'all were getting really good and we had to distract, haha!" (in regards to it being a red herring)

Links: Clue thread is here.

Answer: This clue was just a red herring.

CLUE #12
Peter's piano was a gift and a lift in Caroline. The volume was 1/10th of a southern bel.

Info: First heard on Wednesday, January 28th, at 12:27 PM.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "check spelling of 'bell'"
DJJDfarmhound: "check your spellin' on 'belle'"
djjd: "I can- Caroline is often slang for Carolina, north or south. Like Grits, kind of a bias in the clue. Like I was Counselor Troy- I sense a rapid closing in on this clue. Better get to work on next one!"
DJJDfarmhound: "help for 12- follow the lgob of the dbman" (the dbman refers to Peter Holsapple of the dBs)
DJJDfarmhound: "Does this band make me look fat? http://halfpearblog.blogspot.com/" (this is Holsapple's blog)
DJJDfarmhound: "12- holsapple's blog holds the answer"

Links: Clue thread is here.

Answer: Tift Merritt (not sure about the logic)

CLUE #13
Before Tony Soprano went home, what did he hear?

Info: The last episode of The Sopranos infamously ended with the song "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey - in the middle of the song, the sound cut out and the screen suddenly went black.
First heard on Wednesday, January 28th, at 6:22 PM.

From DJ JD:
DJJDfarmhound: "journey is the start of this clue's journey, but not the FINNISH."
DJJDfarmhound: "and it's not FINLAND." (Finnish/Finland was trying to get us to think countries so we'd get to Portugal)
DJJDfarmhound: "Harrison Ford - well done, you took an accidental twitter meant for other twitter site- and a subconscious slip of the tounge- and whammo." (confirmation that the clue is solved)

Links: Clue thread is here.

Answer: Portugal. The Man (the last thing he heard was Journey, specifically Steve Perry, who is Portuguese. Thus, he heard the man from Portugal, therefore, Portugal. The Man)

CLUE #14
There was that whole murder issue back in 52, but now they get along just fine.

Info: First heard on Thursday, January 29th, at 11:38 AM.

Links: Clue thread is here.

Answer: TV on the Radio (the murder issue refers to "Video Killed the Radio Star" which uses the phrase "back in '52" in the opening line. "They" in the clue could therefore be interpreted as TV and the radio, just one step away from TV on the Radio)

CLUE #15

Info: First heard on Monday, February 2nd, at 12:20 PM.

Links: Clue thread is here.
